Gen Z and Employee Burnout

I'm taking a management class and was assigned a blog statement (like here!) and decided to talk about Gen Z's employee burnout and mindset in the workplace, i thought it would be cool to copy and paste it here :)

⊹。⁖✦ ˖ ⊹。˖ ✧ ⊹。⁖ °✦

Gen Z started working around 2017, and with their entry they introduced a new mindset to the workplace: boundary setting and strong values. If employees don’t feel valued in their office, people often job-hop to find new positions that offer better pay and workplace wellness. However, this could be seen as disloyal, disrespectful, and lazy by other older generations, such as Boomers, who grew up with a hustling or grinding culture. The differing mindset in the workplace creates a tense atmosphere for almost everyone, but it primarily falls on younger workers.

By rejecting the hustle culture, younger employees feel the need to slow down and focus on who they are outside of their job, which allows them to find the energy to continue working the next week. Gen Z’s mindset of prioritizing themselves directly contradicts the current workplace industry, where employees are expected to pour more energy into overtime, and it’s hard to keep these values in check, leading to burnout. Gen Z employees face burnouts not even a decade later, and they experience the highest rate out of all age groups. Andrea Yu wrote the article Why Gen Z workers are already so burned out and stated, “A 2021 survey from jobs website Indeed showed millennials and Gen Z workers were reporting the highest rates of burnout, at 59% and 58% respectively. Reporting rates among Gen Z were increasing fastest; in 2021, 47% of Gen Z said they were burnt out, compared to 53% of millennials.” With employees feeling this burnt out already, it’s important to consider other factors that directly affect their mental health, such as the current economy.

Andrea Yu continues to talk about the different stressors that Gen Z has, specifically the lack of financial instability at the normalization of hustle culture. Gen Z has to pay for all the typical necessities: housing, transportation, student debt, and healthcare, but the problem really stems from how the cost of living is rising faster than salaries. Employees are forced to pick up more hours, which is almost expected nowadays, but with a new emphasis on mental health, employees are left feeling more exhausted than ever and almost hopeless. Yu states, “…A US census data analysis shows median home prices increased 121% from 1960 to 2017, while median household income only increased 29%. Currently, rising inflation is pushing up prices around the world, and worker pay is not keeping pace, intensifying struggles.”

Even with extra hours at work, it’s typically not enough for people to live, which leads others to pick up side hustles or second jobs, and even with those extra efforts Gen Z still faces backlash from older generations, saying that they don’t work hard enough and that they’re unloyal to companies, but with the way that employees are being paid it’s understandable to job hop to places that offer more pay and workplace wellness. Once you’re burnt out, it feels almost impossible to continue doing what you need to do, and with the added stress of side jobs, financial instability, and people insulting your efforts it’s understandable to put more emphasis on your well-being.

progress!

okay so i cooked up a vtuber design last night (technically two nights now!) and ive started making the actual model for it. im super slow at art so this is lowkey torture but im having a lot of fun doing it tho!

her whole premise is that shes an otter, specifically an asian small clawed otter, theyre found in south and southeast asia and are the smallest otter breed! they like to eat crabs and molluscs and other small animals and fish so i wanted to give her a little fish skeleton hair pin. mostly just cuz its cute.

thats what she looks like! thats her colored sketch, something super basic, it might change as i go but so far thats what im sticking with.

i started making her model and stuff and so far today i made her face! im honestly pretty proud, it looks professional and even tho it took me forever it felt really nice to kinda complete at least something. ill attach two photos of her; one showing off her glasses and blush and one plain photo! im really happy with what ive done so far, rigging is so hard and making a model is so fucked. still having fun tho which is good!

still have a lot more to do but ill have to wait till tomorrow when im rested, this really drained me lol.

ill be sure to post more photos here, im excited to do more!

goodnight!

confusion

hello! i haven't posted anything in a little cuz my desk has been a mess and i just didnt wanna clean it up so i never went on my pc lol but im cleaning it now. oopsies!

anyways i'm trying to find a good balance between having fun and locking in on schoolwork, which really sucks cuz i deadass dunno how to lock in on school. i feel like every advisor ive had has been just as confused as i am with classes, and i'm already a semester behind. i was originally in bio for like a year but then switched to management so i have a bunch of credits that are going unused, and now i gotta use more money on classes cuz i didnt plan properly. idk, its really annoying to feel so confused about school and have no one to really talk to to help guide me, but also is that just a skill issue? i know plenty of other people who figured out what classes to take and stuff so idk why i'm having such an issue with it. at this point im just complaining and that doesnt really do anything for me so i might as well just accept it and do what i can to figure stuff out.

besides school being annoying and stuff i have a lot of things i wanna do creatively and i feel like the more i research the more excited i get. i haven't posted anything yet but i promised myself i would have something by the end of the month so expect something soon maybe... but like i might get live2d someday soon so i can finally start thinking about a model and streaming! theres a student discount for like $50 for 3 years which is HUGE so i might get that once i look into rigging more, and once i find a design for myself i really really click with.

ive also been getting a bunch of insta ads on sticker, keychain, and poster manufacturers, so im really excited to just start creating some stuff soon to test like products and stuff, and maybe ill make a few things to give out to friends and family. idk, thinking about future endeavors gives me a lot of hope and makes me happy. i hope i'm able to use that happiness to find a drive to complete school and whatever else. not that i wouldnt complete school. but yk.

ill post a drawing soon and hopefully more entries on my life soon, as long as my desk stays clean lol.

also personal thank you to my boyfriend slay hes getting the first test keychain and sticker i make

edit: okay so my lovely boyfriend just paid for my live2d program (?!?) so i guess ill start practicing the program now and  try to cook up a design faster!!! so excited but holy cow

edit2: honestly live2d isnt terrible to use i think i can get the hang of it in a month prolly, just a lot of videos to watch and learn from! wish me luck ...

first week of classes done!

hooray! first offical week of my junior year is done. i'm really excited, all my classes seem really easy and i'm interested to actually learn new stuff. i met a nice girl who seems really smart and i hope we become friends, she has a drive to her that i could really use for myself. i think i'm just kinda excited about everything overall and i really hope i continue to aim towards my goals, cuz tbh theyre not hard or anything i'm just big and lazy and struggle with creating things. its a little hard for me to think of new ideas or designs cuz i havent done it in forever, mostly cuz i was embarrassed or scared of being judged, so its a muscle i really gotta learn how to use again. i have high hopes for my creative endeavors though, and i really hope i can figure out how to grow a following...

i really hope i can grow as a person and have my work and creative reflect that growth too. idk, theres much to strive for and i wanna see how far i can push myself now.

anyways! i'll try and do weekly drawings, if i dont finish them then i'll just force myself to post the sketch or whatever i have down anyways cuz i think it's really important that i try to get into a routine of things, cuz how else am i supposed to grow? also if i hold myself to this i know i'll prolly get really embarrassed posting something unfinished so it'll motivate me to finish something for once lol. goodnight!

getting used to using social media

i just made like a bunch of accounts for insta, bluesky, twitter and once i get a model pretty soon im gonna have to make a youtube or twitch acc, its so odd to think that i'm gonna have to actually use more than one account. like i only use insta to send posts to friends what do u mean i have to manage like 3 other accounts. and thats only right now !! anyways, i made a linktree acc so u can see all my socials there ! you can see them if u click the little bunny drawing on the right. anyways im super excited and i really really wanna make more stuff, but it's so hard for me to draw anything right now, its a muscle i havent used in forever. once i start and finish real pieces ill be sure to post them here, i wanna make sure i have a place to log my progress :)

new year and new goals!

i've never been the type of person to care about new year resolutions and goals, it was always something that just seemed like extra work to me. as i've gotten older, i've realized how important the ideas and people i surround myself with impacts the way i grow, so i decided that this year would be the year i really get my shit together and create some new goals!

last year i went through the early 20s phase of losing old friends and finding new ones that align more with how i am as a person, and losing these people made me realize how judged and awkward i felt in a space where i should've been able to be myself freely. my hobbies and interests were always something i hid because i felt like people would think i'm weird if i expressed them, but honestly i kinda don't care about what people think anymore!

i want to re-explore my love for drawing, even if i'm bad at it and even if people think it's weird. i really like drawing ponies and i don't care if people think i'm weird for that! once i start posting my drawings on here i also plan on posting them on other platforms, such as X/Twitter and Instagram, and hopefully one day i'll feel confident enough to open up commissions!

i also want to puruse a streaming side hustle/career with my boyfriend, specifically vtuber streaming (i like the anonymity). i started liking vtubers in early 2020, and HoloMyth's debut really pushed that interest into a new hobby i wanted to pursue someday. i really really want to design my own model and rig it, it'd be really cool to see a project that big come to life (literally!), so i hope to finish that maybe before summer or at least during summer.

once i start streaming and having my little art side hustle/hobby on the side, i plan to start a small merch store where i can sell stuff related to other vtubers and IPs that i like, like MLP, animal crossing, and all that other stuff. it would be a dream come true to also sell merch of my own vtuber design, but i'll only be able to start thinking about that once my model is made.

i have big plans for myself and i'm super excited to see them come to fruition, i've never really had plans like this before but i know that if i actually put some effort into this i can really make it come true. i'll keep myself accountable and post updates here for whatever i do, but i'll also probably post smaller things about myself too.

cheers to a new year and new goals! ₍ᐢ. .ᐢ₎
